Git

The Git portal

Browse code, history and changes, and work on issues and pull requests at git.gov.vin.

The portal lists the repositories of every organization you belong to. Reading needs git:read, which every role has.

Code

A repository opens on its default branch:

  • Files and folders, each with the last commit that changed it. Large folders resolve the last commits gradually; entries that weren't changed within the commits searched show as older.
  • README: a README, README.md, README.markdown or README.mdx in the folder is rendered below the listing. Raw HTML in Markdown isn't rendered.
  • Files are shown with syntax highlighting. Binary files and files over 1 MB aren't shown as text.
  • The branch switcher changes the branch for everything on the page.
  • The latest commit bar shows the newest commit on the branch.
  • The Code button has the clone URL.

An empty repository shows the commands to push the first commit.

History

  • Commits lists a branch's history, newest first, following first parents.
  • History on a file or folder lists only the commits that touched it. The search covers a bounded number of commits at a time and says how many it checked.
  • A commit shows its message, author and changes as unified diffs. Very large changes are listed with some files collapsed (see Limits).

Insights

The Insights tab summarizes the default branch (or the branch you pick): commits per week over the last 12 weeks, the top contributors, and the languages of its files by count. It analyzes up to the latest 200 commits; very large trees are scanned partially, and the page says so.

Settings

The Settings tab (needs git:write):

  • Description, shown under the repository name.
  • Default branch: opened first in the portal and the default target for new pull requests.
  • Delete repository (see Repositories).
